SIBIA’S CHARACTER -- THE BLUE BEAD
Sibia, the main character in “The Blue Bead” by Norah Burke, has many different defining
characteristics. First, Sibia was a very hard working child. Sibia lived in and underdeveloped nation in
Africa, where she had to work in order to eat and have a home. She has been working for a very long
time. This was described in the book as “Sibia, in all her life from birth to death, was marked for work”
stating how she had always been working and shall always work (58) . In addition to being
hardworking; Sibia was courageous and strong. She lived in a land where many beasts roam, therefore,
if she wanted to survive she had to be brave and stalwart . “But in the daily heroism of the jungle, ...
Sibia did not hesitate.” reveals – while she was fighting a crocodile and protecting a woman – that
everyone looked out for each other and people had to be brave everyday (61). Lastly, Sibia was poor
and malnutritioned. Living in a third-world country; she had little food or money and access to it. She
had to constantly toil for food, which in turn made her hungrier. The author explains how poor she is by
writing “[i]n all her life, she had never owned anything but a rag” and by describing her as “ ... a thin
starveling child”(57). Those where a few of the many characteristics.
