SETTING (= time, place, social setting)

This story is unusual in that the author spends considerable time describing the physical setting of the planet Venus. Bradbury does this in order to make the atmosphere of the story more threatening and foreboding, as well as to create a powerful juxtaposition (contrast) between the time it pours with rain and the fleeting hour when the sun appears. The reader immediately senses that this is not a healthy place for children to grow up in, and that something bad is going to happen as a consequence.

For each of the following locations in the story:

i. Find 3-4 quotes that describe the look and/or feel of the place;

ii. Explain WHY the description is effective. When you do this, see if you can identify some of the literary techniques (such as repetition, metaphor, personification, alliteration and onomatopoeia) that Bradbury uses to help paint a vivid picture in our minds.

1. Outside the classroom when raining (include the look of the jungle): (4 marks)

2. Inside the classroom and indoor, underground home of the “rocket people”: (4 marks)

3. Outside the classroom when the sun comes out: (4 marks)
