The pauper woman was disliked by all. When she suddenly dies, the villagers feel sympathetic and therefore divide her orphan children among themselves. Te older son and daughter is adopted by two different villagers however no one takes responsibility for the youngest child Maggie. She gets sent to the poor house and she is found to be suffering from a back problem which is why she is bedridden. Nobody accepts her until the Thompson family does.
Mrs.Thompson has no child and doesn't accept Joe at first but then falls in love with her. Maggie is the answer to her loneliness.
The ending could change,
Maggie ends up being rejected by the Thompson family. Instead is she left in the poor house. The lady who took in Maggie's older sister starts making her work in the factory and the farmer starts making their oldest brother John work in the fields. One day they all end up together when Maggie's older sister is sent on a task to collect vegetables directly from a farmer. This is the same farmer who John used to work for. She meets her brother and they both decide to get united with Maggie who is now the owner of the poor house. All of these siblings have grown up and Maggie runs the poor house for all the orphans who ended up here like her. And she lives a happy life being the mother to various children.
