Ans: Insignificant means worthless. Here insignificant means unnecessary station. In the story the writer got in a freight train. Unfortunately it was a simply local train. Moreover it was very slow and it was stopping many unnecessary stations.

How did the author and his companion know that the train was shortly going to arrive at the station?

Ans: Seeing the passengers and their luggage’s that were placed in readiness and a number of curious people, the author and his companion knew that the train was shortly going to arrive at the station.
