Definition of third-order reaction. : a chemical reaction in which the rate of reaction is proportional to the concentration of each of three reacting molecules — compare order of a reaction.
EXAMPLE 1: REACTION BETWEEN NO AND O2

2NO+O2→2NO2(1)(1)2NO+O2→2NO2

r=k[NO]2[O2](2)(2)r=k[NO]2[O2]

EXAMPLE 2: NO AND CL2

2NO+Cl2→2NOCl(3)(3)2NO+Cl2→2NOCl

r=k[NO]2[Cl2](4)(4)r=k[NO]2[Cl2]
