The obvious example is a swing. You push it, and with every push—provided you time things right—the swing moves just a bit higher. This provides good initial understanding of resonance. The thing that resonates has a fundamental resonant frequency determined by its make up, and giving an energy push increases the oscillation, provided you get the frequency right. As you move away from the frequency, you’ll tend to be less successful, unless you are now at a harmonic of that frequency (an integer multiple of the frequency).

Once you start looking around, it’s difficult to find examples of things that don’t resonate. Resonance is (for example) substantially responsible for the destruction of some buildings during earthquakes while others are left intact. There are also many types of resonance other than the mechanical ones I’ve given—things like electrical resonance (pretty important in resonant circuits that drive the clock on your computer, allow radio reception, etc), optical resonance (think lasers), and even nuclear magnetic resonance (analysis using NMR, and imaging using MRI scanners).
