Can someone tell me why Dr. Manette's voice was dreadful and pitiful in Charles Dicken's The Shoemaker?

He had gone to North Tower Jail and over long years his life became dreadful. He had ragged clothes, He couldn't remember his family and his best friend Mr. Lorry. So his voice became dreadful
