An atom is the smallest particle of an element. An atom is made up of nucleus consisting protons and neutrons and electrons which keep revolving around the nucleus. The imaginary orbits in the electrons keep revolving around the nucleus is called shell of the atom. An atom consists of shells. The shell closest to the nucleus is assigned the value n=1, and it is called K shell.

Next comes rhe L,M,N shells. The number of electrons that each shells can hold is given by the formula 2n^2. For example, the first K shell can hold maximum of 2 electrons and then, L shell can hold 2(2)^2 = 8 electrons. Similarly M shell can hold 2(3)^2 = 18 and N shell can hold 2(4)^2 = 32.
