‘Evans Tries an O Level’ is the story about Evans who is a mastermind jail-breaker whom no prison can withhold long. The chapter also tells us that how proactive and visionary the people involved in crimes are. They are always working to stay ahead of the police. Keeping Evans’s jail-breaking skills in mind, he is shifted to a very high security prison in Oxford. Evans is kept in a high-security cell. Evans and his gang make another mastermind plan. He applies for clearing his O Level in German. The jail authorities have to make arrangements for his tuition and exams. The amusing thing is Evans’s gang is involved in the plan since the beginning. The tutor who comes to teach German to Evans is a man from the gang. The Examination Board arranges for conducting the exam in Evans’s prison cell. At the end of the chapter we come to know that someone in the Examination Board was also involved in Evans’s escape plan. Evans very cleverly succeeds in hiding a razor (he uses it later to cut his hair to look like Mc Leery). The Examination Board sends Mc Leery, a pastor as an invigilator. The invigilator is frisked to ensure he has not brought anything using which Evans can hold him as hostage. The prison officer Jackson finds a strange object in his brief-case. It was a semi-inflated rubber. The pastor explains him it was for sitting on as he was suffering from haemorrhoids.

The examination starts. For security purposes, Evans’s cell had been bugged with microphones. Stephens, the junior prison officer was made to stand guard. Evans objects to Stephens’s presence in the cell as a result, Stephens is made to stand out. The examination goes on. Evans does not write a single word on the answer sheet. Then just after the half time is over, he requests the invigilator if he can wrap himself with blanket as it is very cold inside the cell.

The examination is over. Stephens himself escorts Mc Leery out of the prison. However, when he comes back to have a look at Evans, he is in for a shock. In place of Evans, he finds Mc Leery reclining unconsciously on the chair, with blood dripping from his head. Alarms are sounded. Guards run here and there; more police vans arrive. Detective Carter is called. Mc Leery offers to help as he knows where Evans has gone. He goes out with Carter. They go to Newbury. They chase a suspect but then they lose track of the car they were chasing. Carter asks Mc Leery to go to hospital. He calls a hospital to send ambulance and he goes to the prison.

At prison the governor is worried about Mc Leery, in order to inquire how he is now, he calls the hospital. The receptionist tells him there is no Mc Leery. She explains when the ambulance reached to pick him at the spot, he was not there. Now governor understands the entire game. He issues orders and calls other detectives. After a few hours efforts he succeeds in arresting Evans from a hotel. He asks Evans the details of his plan. He explains how Mc Leery had brought exactly an extra same suit he was wearing on the day of examination. He had worn the suit under the blanket. The blood was hidden in the tube Mc Leery had brought.

Now Evans is handcuffed and seated in the prison van. The van starts moving towards the prison. After the van goes a few meters away, the driver sitting in the van opens Evans’s hand-cuffs. He asks from him where they should speed now. Actually the driver again is a man from Evans’s gang.
