since the ancient history to Vedic period,when humans were being emerged and didn't have house,they used to seek shelter in extreme climates and to cook food even.humans also used to preserve painting and depicts inside caves.a recent finding of edakkal caves in Kerala shows the evidence of human presence of Harappan civilization.later on Vedic period when the era of mahavira and budha arrived,caves took the shape of chaityas and viharas where monk used to stay for longer period.many of the caves in Maharashtra,Kashmir and madhya Pradesh gave light on this.
