yes the distance travelled by the object be smaller then the magnitude of its displacement

No ,it can't because the distance is the length of the path either it is curved or straight but displacement is the length of the straight lined path connecting the initial point and the final point.Diasplacement can be zero but distance can't be zero.So we can say the distance travelled by an object is greater than the magnitude of displacement.
