Can the following groups of elements be classified as Dobereiner's triad:
(a) Na, Si, Cl (b) Be, Mg, Ca
Atomic mass of Be−9, Na−23, Mg−24, Si−28, Cl−35, Ca−40.

Answer:

Dobereiner's triad : the atomic mass of middle element was approximately equal to mean of the atomic masses of other two elements.

a) Na,Si,Cl

Na+Cl/2= 23+35/2

=58/2 =29

Si = 28

Na ,Si, Cl are dobereiner's triad as middle is equal to mean of other two.

b) Be, Mg, Ca

Be+Ca/2= 9+40/2

=49/2=24.5

Mg= 24

Be, Mg, Ca are dobereiner's traid as middle element atomic mass is equal to mean of other two elements.
