No, it is impossible for the magnitude of the sum to be equal to the sum of the magnitudes. c-Yes, if the two vectors are in the same direction. d-Yes, if the two vectors are perpendicular. Yes, if one of the vectors is zero.

QUESTION:-

can the sum of 2 vectors be scalar and how?

ANSWER:-

  • The sum of 2 vectors cannot be scalar because as we know only like vectors can be summed up. Hence, the sum of two vectors will be a vector having as it will have both magnitude and direction whereas, scalar quantity has only magnitude.

  • The sum of 2 vectors cannot be scalar but the product of 2 vectors can be scalar because the dot product it takes two vectors and the output is a scalar. This scalar is proportional to the product of the vector magnitudes multiplied by the cosine of the angle between them.

  • A scalar quantity is specified as the physical quantity that has only magnitude whereas, a vector quantity is interpreted as the physical quantity that has both magnitudes as well as direction.
