Answer:

That’s a tough one! Neither one is bad. Industrial engineering really gives you a sense of scale for what happens behind the scenes with a strong emphasis on process and production, but I would have to say mechanical engineering would be a better fit, and there’s some precedence for that. I actually know several people that have gone to school for mechanical engineering and in the process fallen in love with industrial design. Most of these people were naturally talented in sketching and drawing and did a lot of art in high school but entered university not even aware that industrial design was an option. They spent several years learning the math and engineering of mechanical but never stopped sketching and imagining new ideas. Also, there are some schools out there that place industrial design in the school of engineering which makes cross over a lot more likely (although it’s more frequently placed in architecture or art/design programs).

The biggest benefit of combining iD/Mechanical is the likelyhood of shared skill sets and the ability to master 3D modeling programs like Fusion360 and SolidWorks that are heavily used by both professions. The newest software programs, like Fusion360, are really streamlining this process which means that you don’t have to completely recreate a design as it moves from concept to production. An employee that could follow a project all the way through would be a valuable asset for a product development firm and could potentially save them a lot of money and make the process competitively faster.
