The velocity of an object can be in a direction other than the direction of the acceleration.

Reason :

In case of deceleration, the acceleration will be in the opposite direction.

Therefore will be a velocity in same direction as the acceleration and at the same time a velocity in the opposite direction of the acceleration.

The velocity acting in the same direction as the acceleration is the resultant velocity.
