Compton explained and modeled the data by assuming a particle(photon) nature for light and applying conservation of energy and conservation of momentum to the collision between the photon and the electron. The scatteredphoton has lower energy and therefore a longer wavelength according to Planck's relationship

Compton scattering is an example of inelastic
scattering of light by a free charged particle , where
the wavelength of the scattered light is different
from that of the incident radiation. ... The effect is
significant because it demonstrates that light cannot
be explained purely as a wave phenomenon.
