Any reaction between any two elements depends on the number of free electrons in the outermost orbit of an atom. The reaction is result of free electrons forming new chemicals (i.e. they should either loose electron or gain electrons to attain stability and to form reactions).

The metals have less free electrons that are tightly coupled to the centre of the atom. Hence reaction between two metals becomes difficult.

Metals can be mixed together to form alloys (As zinc and copper form brass) however no reaction is possible between them.
