as given: for the first km, the fare is the only Rs.8 and for latter kms, it is Rs5/km

so equation is: y = 8 + (x-1)5
                          y = 8 + 5x - 5
                         y = 3 + 5x
given: y= 63

63 = 3 + 5x; 60 = 5x ; x = 12

therefore, the traveler had travelled 12 kms ;)

Let the total distance travelled be x km.

For (x-1) km, fare is 5 per km.

Let the fare be y.

y = 8 + 5(x-1)

y= 8+ 5x -5

Therefore,

y = 5x + 3

When cost = y = RS.63,

Therefore,

63 = 5x + 3

5x = 60,

x = 12.

Therefore the distance travelled is 12 km
