Mendeleevs periodic table is based on the idea of atomic masses... Mendeleevs table had 7 periods and 8 groups there is a row which gives the formula of oxides and hydrides... There were some gaps left so that the future elements can be predicted (eka boron eka aluminium eka silicon). Some anomalies is the position of hydrogen.. Elements of different properties were grouped together.

mendeleev started his work with 63 elements know at that time.he examined the relationship between atomic masses of the elements and thier physical and chemical properties.Among chemical properties,he concentrated on the compounds formed by elements with oxygen and ydrogen which were know to react with most elements .the formulae of oxides and hydrides of the elements were treated as basic properties for classification.
