Cotton is one of the largest textiles around the globe and supports national economies in places like India and Pakistan. Although cotton is everywhere today, where did it start? How long ago were people weaving it into garments and blankets? It actually started thousands of years ago

Cotton textile is a main industry of the industrial economy of india.It is that industry of India which provides maximum employment and production.It employs about 3.5 crore people of the country.
The first cotton textile mill in india was established in Mumbai.Thereafter Shahpur mills and Calico mills were established at ahmedabad.
Initially most of the mills were established in Maharashtra nd Gujarat because these regions produced huge cotton and were a large market. Moreover labourers, Skilled labourers,electricity,Banks,Ports for export,humid climate and good transport infrastructure were available here. The industry developed and spread in other states afterwards.Today cotton textile mills are found in about 100 cities of the country.
Most of the mills are concentrated in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu ,West Bengal ,M.P and U.P.
In gujarat, Ahmedabad is called as Manchester of the east or Denim city of India.
India holds second rank after china in the export of cotton textiles.
