essay on haritha haram program
Essay on Haritha Haram Program – Our life continues until we breathe in and out. We owe our existence to the plant kingdom. Plants provide food to all terrestrial living beings. But no other organism can deplete the green cover like us. Plants not only absorb carbon dioxide but also other polluting gases like carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrous oxides. Trees are home to many birds, insects, and animals. They help in increasing the groundwater level and also prevent floods and landslides. Trees make the surroundings naturally cool and give an aesthetic look. With the blooming flowers and the delicious fruits, our lives become heavenly. Most of the tourist places today have a canopy of green. Have you ever wondered, why?
It is because we have cleared forests for settling down and built concrete jungles instead. It is we who need roads, airports, bus depots, shopping malls, and gated communities. By felling of trees, we have also destroyed the habitat of many birds, insects, and animals. We are disrupting the food chain. But now, we face troubles like unprecedented rains, drowning cities, years of drought, and unbreathable air. Afforestation and maximizing the flora is the foremost requirement to prevent nature’s fury.
Haritha Haram initiative by Tamil Nadu government
The state government of Telangana, on 3rd July 2015, came up with a flagship program called ‘Telanganaku Haritha Haram’. The National Forest Policy of India envisages a minimum of 33% of the total geographical area under forest / tree cover to maintain environmental stability and ecological balance; that are vital for sustenance of all life-forms, human, animal and plants. The objective of this project was to increase the tree cover in the state from 24 percent to 33 percent. The government planned to plant around 230 crores of saplings in the state.
Implementation of Haritha Haram
The government of Tamil Nadu aimed at planting 130 crores of saplings in non-forest areas and 100 crores in forest locations. The government formed committees at village and district levels. People working in panchayats, municipalities, and corporations were given the task of steering and monitoring the project. Many awareness programs were held so that people get attuned to the government’s massive efforts. The government also sought active participation from the public. The avenue plantation team takes care of plantings along the highways. This not only beautifies our roads but act as lung spaces especially in urban areas where the level of carbon dioxide is high due to traffic. Institutes like schools, colleges, hospitals, and government premises having open spaces took up planting. The students and the employees actively participate in the program. The government also undertook to plant in river and canal banks, lakeshores, etc. It also gave awareness sessions to farmers on the benefits of agroforestry. Afforestation of barren hills is also under the government’s action plans. It introduced seed bombing techniques to plant on hills and remote locations.
To encourage planting, the government gives awards like Haritha Mithra awards to stakeholders including individuals, public representatives, NGOs, Government organizations, and Corporates.
