Antonio was in a melancholy (sad) mood so, his friends Salarino and Salanio were trying to comfort him do that he can get rid of his sadness.

As, Antonio was not ready to tell the reason of his sadness therefore Salarino and Salanio were predecting the reason for which Antonio could be sad.

One such prediction was done by Salarino that Antonio might be in melancholy mood because his ships may be in danger. So, he explains whatever he would have done if his ships were at sail in the sea.

He says that if his ships were at sail in the sea then he would have plucked a grass and have allowed it to flow in the sky to check in which direction the wind is blowing. By doing such act he would come to know the direction of the wind and by knowing the direction of the wind he can sail his ships in right direction to avoid any shipwreck.

Then he says that he would study the maps and harbours just to check if his ships are going in right direction or not.

Thirdly, he says that the sandy hour glass would remind of the sand of the sea bed because after sinking a ship lies in the sea bed only.

Then he says that the rocks of the church would remind him of the big sea rocks which may cause damage to the ship.

He explains all these just to define the measures he would have taken if his ships were in sail.
