In human there are 23 pairs of chromosomes out of them 22 years are similar and called autosomes . 23rd pair is different from others and known as sex chromosome . In male in pair of sex chromosome one is big and one is small and represented by xy in female it is XX. at the time of fertilization when sperm with X chromosomes meet with of ovules then newborn is female with XX but when Y chromosomes containing sperm meets with ovules then new born carries xy sex chromosomes means it is male.
