can velocity be negative? if yes then how?

Yes, Velocity can be Negative.
Velocity being a Vector Quantity shows both Magnitude and Direction, and hence, the (-) sign indicates that the motion is taking place in the opposite direction.

bserve that the object below moves in the negative direction with a changing velocity. An object which moves in the negativedirection has a negative velocity. If the object is speeding up then its acceleration vector is directed in the same direction as its motion (in this case, a negativeacceleration).
