Can water cause molecules in a piece of chalk to break apart? How can you say this?

Perhaps yes, water can cause molecules in a piece of chalk to break apart.
Let us assume that if we put chalk in water, after sometime the chalk changes into a liquid with tiny biths of powder so it tells us that water can cause chalk molecules to split.
