Can we cancel out the powers
A^2/B^2=A/B is this correct.

No , we are not supposed to do it.
If u have values on both sides that is LHS & RHS , then u can simplify the equation by taking square root on both sides.
example :
IF A^2/ B^2 = X^2
then taking sq. root
=> A/B = X
