Can we determine if a substance is ionic or molecular from batteries? If so, how?
Answers
Answer:
Yes,
it can be determined if a substance is ionic or covalent by using batteries.
We can use batteries in order to setup an electrical system consisting of cathode, anode and solution.
First of all we should dissolve the substance in a proper solvent and then we can apply the potential difference of the batteries at the two electrodes at opposite ends of the solution.
Then we should check if there is deposition of materials constituting the given substance at anode and cathode.
If materials does get deposited at electrodes then we can say that the substance is ionic and has undergone dissolution in the solvent.
But if no such material is deposited we can say that the substance is is covalent nonpolar and does not undergo dissolution in a polar solvent.
