Backlash error is measured by calculating the difference between the rotary enćoder x1 and the linear scale x2, when the motion of the table is reversed. A selection of 25 target positions in forward and backward directions respectively was measured in the test cycle, as show in Fig. 5.

Answer. Backlash error occurs in screw gauge, when we try to rotate the screw very fast to measure a reading then there is some slipping b/w the different screws instead of rotation, which gives an incorrect reading, to avoid this we should rotate the screw in only one direction.
