Therefore, even though a double and triple bond is stronger than a single bond, a double bond is not twice as strong nor is a triple bond three times as strong as a sigma bond....

Answer:

Yes, we can say that a double bond is stronger than a single bond and a triple bond is stronger than both double as well as a single bond(Read it carefully)

The reason behind this is the no. of electrons shared in a covalent bond formation.

In single bonds, only 2 electrons are shared

In double bonds, 4 electrons are shared

In triple bonds, 6 electrons are shared.

If the no. of electrons shared in a bond are compared, then ratio come out to be 1:2:3

From this, we can only conclude that

≡ > = > -

That's it.

But.. It doesn't means that double bond is dual the strength of single or sigma bond or the triple bond is three times stronger than a single bond.
