WATER IS A COMPOUND AND NOT A MIXTURE BECAUSE

1 In a COM POUND the constituent elements

are in a fixed proportion whereas in a mixture it is necessarily notn so In water Hydrogen and Oxygen are in a definite ratio ie 2 : 1 volumetrically and 1:8 by weight

2 While forming a compound a chemical reaction necessarily takes place but it is not so while forming a mixture Here water is formed because of a chemical reaction between Hydrogen and Oxygen

2H2 + O2 = 2 H2O

3 In case of a compound the constituent elements cannot be obtained back using simple physical processes In case of a mixture they can be so obtained back

Hydrogen and Oxygen cannot be obtained back using simple physical processes

4 In case of a chemical compound the constituent elements do not retain their properties but in case of a mixture the constituents retain their properties In water there are no properties of Hydrogen or Oxygen

Hydrogen is combustible ie it burns readily in the atmosphere and Oxygen helps combustion On the contrary water is used to extinguish the fire..
I hope it's help U :-))
