Photosynthesis, the process by which green plants and blue-green algae use the energy of light to convert carbon dioxide and water into the simple sugar glucose. In so doing, photosynthesis provides the basic energy source for virtually all organisms. Photosynthesis is important to live organisms because it is the source of oxygen in the atmosphere. Without photosynthesis, the carbon cycle could not occur, oxygen-requiring life would not survive. The process provides the initial organic carbon source in the form of glucose and oxygen as the by-product.
