Atom is the smallest unit of any material. It has three sub atomic units-
1. Protons => These are the positive charges present in an atom
2. Neutrons => Neutrons don't have any charge on them.
3. Electrons => Electrons are negatively charged particles.
Atom as a whole is electrically neutral i.e. the protons in an atom is always equal to the number of electrons. That is what makes an atom electrically neutral.
Moreover John Dalton haa given atomic theory in which he stated several points about an atom. But later on his this atomic theory was proved to be wrong. He considered that atom is the smallest unit and can not be furthur divided but later after the discover of electrons, protons and neutrons (sub atomic parts) hus theory was proved wrong.
