Most famines in the British period occurred because of the British policy of growing cash crops instead of food crops.
But even in that condition india was not in such a bad place. The real reason was the fact that the British did not care about their Indian subjects. They produced crops to either drive up the price of crop or to help the English granary reserves.
One such example is the great famine of Bengal of 1943 when the British stopped a ship laden with crop to dock on the Bengal port and ordered the food to be delivered to Britain's stockpile reserve.
