The pendulum was discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1602. The regular motion of the pendulum was used for time keeping. A load that hangs from an axle so that it can swing freely. When we rest on that pendulum and the balanced position is shifted to the side. So it is subject to a restorative force due to gravity. Which will push it back to the balanced state.
