Can you hold your breath for long? Why/why not? Why after releasing your breath, you have to breathe heavily?

It happens because the level of carbon dioxide starts building up in our blood while we hold our breath. And when we actually start breathing, the demand for oxygen increases in our body due to which we breathe heavily. It later becomes normal.
