The latitude is the angular distance of a place, north or south of the equator, as measured from the centre of the earth. Their are 180 parallels of latitude in all.

Longitude is the angular distance of a place on the surface of the earth measured in degrees east or west of the prime meridian. In order to have a common line of reference to measure east west distance on earth all countries of world agreed central line of longitude passing through Greenwich in England as the 0 degree line.
