 \frac{p}{q}

where q not equal to zero

since

 \sqrt{2}  \: can \: be \: written \: as \:  \frac{ \sqrt{2} }{1}

but

 \sqrt{2} \: is \: not \: an \: integer \:

so therefore it is not a rational number
