when two or more elements or compounds or both are mixed together in any proportion, such that they do not combine chemically,a mixture is formed.

when two or more elements unite chemically in a fixed proportion,a compound is formed.

difference:

mixture may be homogeneous or heterogeneoous. while compounds are always homogeneous.
