birds kept as pets are usually smaller birds such as sparrows, parrots etc. These don't require a bigger space to fly and can be grown at home and they can fly freely. This is also the case at zoos.
The only difference is when the birds are bigger like toucan, pelican, vultures etc. These require a very huge space which can be provided at zoos and not at home.
