(1) Hydrogen can be placed in group 1 as it has one electron in the outer shell. (1s¹). It resembles alkali metals of group 1 in forming univalent positive ions.

(2) Hydrogen can be placed in group 17 (ns²np^5) (halogens) as it can get one electron to get outer electronic configuration of inert gas. It is a diatomic gas. Thus hydrogen shows similarity in properties of alkali metals as well as halogens.

Hydrogen atom contains one electron which is present in K shell. Hydrogen, like elements of group one lose an election to from H+ ion and it is also possible for hydrogen to gain electron and form H- ion. This way, it exhibits similarly with group 17 elements. Their, in the periodic table hydrogen can be placed both in group 1 and group 17.
