Ww1 was started when the heir to the throne of Austria Hungary, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo. Austria hungary, suspecting that Serbia had staged the assassination, declared war on them. The Serbian government was under the protection of Russian empire and as a result Russia declared war on Austria Hungary. Germany in turn declared war on Russia which led to France declaring war on Germany.
