Mahabharat was written by Ved Vyas and is too long to tell. So here is the summary.

King Pandu has 5 sons named as Pandavas and Dhritrashtra has 100 sons named as Kauravas and a daughter named as Duhshala.

From the childhood, Shakuni sowed the seeds of hatred between Pandavas and Kauravas. Further, when they grew up, Yuddhishthira was made the king and then Shakuni challenged Yuddhishthira to play Chausar (Ludo of that time) Yuddhishthira lost and as a result, Pandavas were sent to 12 years of exile and 1 year for agyatwas (Unknown travelling with hiding their identity). They were said that when they will return, their Kingdom would be returned to them but Kauravas broke their promise which resulted into a war between Pandavas and Kauravas.

During the war, Krishna gave knowledge (updesh) to Arjun known as "Geeta".

The war lasted for 18 days and on the last day, Bheema killed Duryodhan (the eldest son) and Pandavas won the battle.

After that Yuddhishthira was made the king.

Main motive of this war was to reduce the sin on the head of goddess earth (Bhudevi) by a huge bloodshed.

Mahabharat tells us the morals and ethics of reality.

Hope it helps
