The other ending of face in the dark by Ruskin Bond is that, when Mr. Oliver rushes amidst the pine tree after seeing the watchman, he finds a lantern hanging mid air in the forest, but he takes it as he needed some light to show him to go back his way. Just then from behind a tree a man appears, who was relaxing there while returning from the Shimla bazaar. as soon as Mr. Oliver lifts the lantern to his own face, on the request of the man, the man faints. There is no face. Mr. Oliver doesn't have  a face, eyes or nose. A lovable and soft spoken teacher of yesterday becomes a dreaded faceless apparition today.
