Answer:
I am a deeply religious person. I believe in an all-powerful, all-knowing universal force. For the sake of simplicity, let us refer to that force as a masculine God. I believe that a force watches over all of us and responds to our actions in largely unknown ways. I know He has kept an eye on me, because it appears that I will reach Medicare age and will be able to enjoy life's pleasures.
Explanation:
But I have scientific proof that praying for someone's health is detrimental to their chances. I'll present the data, but first let me explain the logic I see behind it. God does not approve of people seeking selfish benefits for themselves and those they love (just as He would not approve of creating tax shelters so your child will have more gumba to play with). He has no reason to. Which religious theory, Christian or otherwise, should God use to respond to those who wish for their loved ones to live while others die? What kind of arrogant selfishness would convince us otherwise? So, if you pray for someone to live, prosper, or succeed, you irritate God, and He harms them to the extent He can spare the attention and effort.
Don't misunderstand me and label me an atheist. If you want to pray, keep it between you and the One for Whom it is intended, rather than trying to curry favour with your audience by posing as a God-fearing American. At the very least, you will not cause any harm.
