Water from the Planalto highlands flow into the gradually-sloped, large depression of Pantanal. From there, the water flows out as the Paraguay River and its tributaries. The Pantanal forms a vast swampy area as a result of deposits from the several rivers and water systems flowing into it.


It is home to a diverse collection of flora and fauna.


The Pantanal is the world's largest tropical wetland area. Mostly spread over Brazil, it stretches to Bolivia and Paraguay.
