Candy canes were
invented in the first place to get children to keep their mouths shut so that
they would not make noise during a church service on Christmas Eve. They were
made by a local candy-maker on request of a choirmaster in Germany in 1670. The
choirmaster of the church requested the candy-maker to make sweet sticks with a
curve at the top. The idea was to remind children about the shepherds who
visited infant Jesus.
