Calcium oxide (CaO) combines with silicon dioxide (SiO2) to form a new product as calcium silicate (CaSiO3). This is a combination reaction.

In the equation CaO + SiO2 ------ CaSiO3 the compound acts as a flux is CaO.

  • In the extraction of iron, CaO is used as a basic flux due to the presence of impurities in acidic silica.
  • The product formed on reaction of this substance forms CaSiO3, which is known as slag.
  • Similarly, in the extraction of cu impurity present is FeO and the flux is SiO2. The slag this formed is FeSiO3.
  • Extraction of iron occurs in blast furnace and extraction of cu in bessmer converter.
