Calcium hydroxide or lime water reacts with ‘carbon dioxide gas’ to form an insoluble milky calcium carbonate of white precipitate and water. The mechanism of reaction of carbon dioxide in aqueous calcium hydroxide is a double displacement reaction.

Calcium hydroxide + carbon dioxide → Calcium carbonate + water

The equation for the reaction:

\mathrm{Ca}(\mathrm{OH})_{2}+\mathrm{CO}_{2} \rightarrow \mathrm{CaCO}_{3}+\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}Ca(OH)

Both the right (products) and left (reactants) side of the “equation are balanced”.
