captain harry is on a geocache. His GPS tells him that he is 40 m away from the treasure. He walks 24m due west. the GPS compass now tells him that the treasure is due south from where he is standing. how far south does he need to go to find it? (with explanation please)

Answer: 32 km

Explanation:

Pythagoras Theorem is to be applied in this particular question. He is standing at one point, mark that point in a blank paper, then he goes 24 km west, draw a line in west direction in your blank paper from that particular point. GPS will always show best route, thus 40 km shown was direct distance, which will form Hypotenuse of our triangle. Now, apply the Pythagoras theorem.

(?)2+(24)2=(40)2    (2 is square here)

(?)2=(40)2-(24)2

(?)2=1600-576

?=32 km.
