Given :   Capt. Hooke is on a treasure hunt. His GPS shows him that he is 40 m away from what he is looking for. He walks 24 m towards west. The GPS compass now tells him that the treasure is due south from where he is standing.

To Find : How far south does he need to go to discover it?

Solution :

            NORTH

WEST                EAST

           SOUTH

Goes 24 m west

Let say  x m he need to go south

Hence Total Distance from start = √(24² + x²)

40 m away  it was from starting hence

√(24² + x²) = 40

=> 576 + x² = 1600

=> x² = 1024

=> x  = 32

Hence he  t need to walk  32 m.
